Upcoming at Tablet Legal

Hello all. I’m back in business after a bit of hiatus. What started as just an overdose of soccer for the group stage of the World Cup (adding 4-6 hours of soccer to your schedule cuts into blogging time) transformed into a problem with my web host. Got the technical side pretty much cleaned up and the site moved over to a new host, ICDSoft which I’m loving so far. Only downside is that a few comments were lost in the transition – if yours was one of them, apologies. Big thanks to my friends at DBD+A for handling the pesky details and making some improvements around the site.

We’ve got some good stuff coming in the next few weeks. Thanks for sticking around.

iPad Web Traffic Share at Tablet Legal

I was inspired by John Gruber over at Daring Fireball to take a look at what comprised the operating systems of devices accessing Tablet Legal. For the month of April 18 to May 18, it breaks down like this:

Tablet Legal OS Share

  • Macintosh      43.18 %
  • Windows        36.92 %
  • iPad              19.13 %
  • Other               .77 %

Given that this is a blog dedicated to the iPad, no surprises to see nearly 20% of the visits originate on the device. The roughly equal split between Mac and Windows visitors may suggest similar interest in the device between those two demographics. I was a bit surprised not to see more iPhone access (it is buried along with Linux and Android in “Other”).

The iPad browsing experience is certainly as good or better than my desktop browsing experience – far better when I want to be on my couch or back porch. Would love to know how many readers in the Windows and Mac group also have an iPad.

TabletLegal on Alltop

Happy to see and report that TabletLegal has been added to the iPad category of Alltop.  While there are quite a few iPad blogs on Alltop, TabletLegal is the only law focused blog that I noticed on their iPad list.

Alltop is a great way to consume RSS on your favorite subjects if you (i) don’t know what RSS is or (ii) don’t want to mess with a reader. Use MyAlltop to customize a page just for you filled with the most recent links to your favorite blogs.

Video tutorial for Alltop is below and see here for a FAQ about the MyAlltop feature.

Thanks, Alltop!

Tablet Legal = iPad + Lawyers

Last Wednesday, Apple announced its new tablet device, the iPad in front of an eager group of press and techies in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

I suspect there weren’t many lawyers among the group in attendance. Even so, my hunch is that the iPad will find more than a few applications in the legal industry and in some areas, may become a fixture.

I’m a practicing business attorney in Portland, Oregon. I use the iPhone extensively in my practice and expect to use the iPad in my practice as well once released.Like other lawyers who use the iPhone, I think the iPhone is the best mobile computing device for attorneys. With the development of cloud and SaaS tools for lawyers, the iPad should prove a powerful tool as well.

This blog will discuss lawyers using the iPad, applications for the iPad and other developments specific to the iPad in the legal profession. In the next few months until the iPad is released, I’ll discuss how existing legal apps might change for the iPad platform and what new apps may develop. I’m looking forward to see if Apple can pull off another game changing product and how it will affect my practice and the legal industry.

Cheers!
